Defensible Space Stewardship Day
The goal of this stewardship day is not only to create actual defensible space around a structure for a family or individual in need, but also to empower students to feel capable in creating a safer environment for all of us to live in. This partnership brings together SWEP, local fire agencies, local businesses, local schools, and community members to work together to reduce fear around castastrophic wildfire.

What is this program? Defensible Space Stewardship Day (DSSD) is a program designed to empower and educate our local youth on what we each can do to improve our defensible space to help reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfire.
How does this program work? This program is a 2-day lesson, one in-class pre-lesson where students learn the basics around defensible space, get introduced to the SWEP team and Fire District staff, and to prepare for the field day. The second day is the field day, where students arrive at the location and break into small groups to work with adult facilitators to remove pine needles, cut branches and any other flammable debris interfering with defensible space.
Who can participate in this program? This program is ideal for 5th - 12th graders.
Where is this program offered? Any school in the Tahoe-Truckee area that has transportation to an identified house that needs defensible space work.
