The Teacher’s Interpretive Hike Series is an exciting opportunity for teachers to explore the local watershed with resource professionals and experts. Teachers will acquire the content knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate watershed topics into existing curriculum and gain ideas for service learning projects. Interdisciplinary activities, project ideas and a resources list will be provided for each hike.
Cultural History with the Washo Tribe
Meeks Bay Resort, Hwy 89 (West Shore)

This session is not to be missed! Please join SWEP and the Washo Tribe at the Meeks Bay Resort, where tribal elders, storytellers and plant experts will join us. We will hear a traditional opening prayer, learn about native plants of importance to the Washo people and listen to stories of cultural significance to the history of the Tribe. An open dialog will allow for discussion about how Washo knowledge and history can best be incorporated into meaningful and lasting experiences in area schools.

Wetlands Tour @ UC Davis Historic Fish Hatchery Building
Lake Forest Dr. and Hwy 28 (Tahoe City)
October 5, 4-6pm
Come and learn about the unique flora and fauna of Lake Tahoe’s wetlands. Participants will begin from the UC Davis ‘fish hatchery’ and walk to the shores of Lake Tahoe via the wetland. Learn about the renovation, wetland restoration and education plans for the UC Davis site. We will do a vegetation monitoring survey with UCD researchers and introduce Project WET curriculum activities for incorporating wetlands into your classroom curriculum.

River of Words with artist Cathee St. Claire
Martis Creek, Truckee
October 12, 4-6:00pm
Experienced artist and poet Cathee St. Claire will lead us through activities and techniques for teaching art and poetry. Learn about the International River of Words art and poetry contest and what opportunities exist for a local River of Words contest and public art and poetry show. Learn activities and tips for teaching art and poetry using the environment as the theme.
