Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships
The Sierra Jr. Naturalist program assists teachers, parent docents, scout leaders and others in teaching youth how to identify Sierra Nevada native species. Through observation, investigation and data collection, students are introduced to our non-human neighbors: the native flora and fauna of our place, the Lake Tahoe Region. This program is designed for groups of nearly any size and any age.
Currently, SWEP has developed materials and methods for native plant identification. The Jr. Botanist program is being implemented in classrooms throughout the TTUSD. Thanks to parent volunteer, Kris Kuyper, SWEP has developed a Jr. Botanist guide book for volunteers, teachers and others wishing to implement the program. These materials will be available for downloading soon.

This program was developed by Jan Ellis, SWEP project director (2002-2008). Thanks to Truckee Rotary Club and Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation for the funds that help us develop the study materials. Kris Kuyper, parent volunteer, compiled the plant pictures and some descriptions from the internet. Thanks!
